What is an Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)?

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, or ESG, is a safe and effective, incisionless procedure that reduces the stomach size by 70-80%. This reduced stomach size helps you to lose weight by helping you to consume a lower calorie diet without the feeling of hunger all the time. Patients can lose an average of 50+ pounds depending on your commitment to changing diet and lifestyle following the procedure.

The procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure and most patients are able to go home on the same day and return to work in 2-3 days following the procedure. For a better visualization of how this procedure is performed, please view the video below:

Results for patients who have had the procedure

  • 49%

Lose 49% excess body weight 12 months after the procedure

  • 14%

Lose an average of 14% total body weight after 12 months

  • 68%

68% of patients maintained most of their weight loss after 2 years

In a large, randomized clinical study, patients on average lost about 14% of their total body weight, or 49% of excess body weight in the 12 months following an ESG procedure. This percentage nearly doubles our target goal of helping patients lose 25% excess body weight. Additionally, 68% of patients maintained most of their weight loss for more than 2 years after the procedure. ESG can also have additional improvement in obesity-related conditions, such as Type II diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea in addition to weight loss.

Who is a good candidate for ESG?

The ESG is designed for adults with a BMI 30 -50 kg/m2 or above and have not been able to lose weight through diet and exercise alone. An ESG is also a good choice for patients with a physical condition that makes them ineligible for more invasive bariatric surgeries. However certain health conditions may prevent you from receiving an ESG. Frequently Asked Questions

How does an ESG help you lose weight?

The ESG reduces the size of the stomach by 70-80%. The procedure gives you a kickstart to losing weight by helping you feel fuller faster, so that you consume less food without the feeling of hunger. The procedure also prolongs the time that food stays in the stomach, so smaller meals can satisfy your hunger for longer periods of time.

How much does the procedure cost?

Generally, you can expect the fees for the procedure to vary from $3,000 – $8,000. However, the total cost for the procedure and follow-ups are subject to variability between patients and may change without advance notice. Our team will work with you on a one-on-one basis to help determine coverage and provide financing options that may be available to you. How much weight can I lose?

On average, patients lose about 14% of their total body weight, or 49% of their excess body weight in 12 months after the procedure. However, it is important to note that results will vary between each person. Committing to changing your habits and lifestyle will be extremely important to maximizing your results.

How is the ESG procedure performed?

The ESG procedure is a non-invasive, incisionless procedure performed using a suturing device attached to a camera that is inserted through your mouth while you are asleep. Once the camera reaches the stomach, a few sutures are placed to sew the stomach and decrease the size by 70-80%.

Why choose an ESG over a gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, or other bariatric surgeries?

Compared to bariatric surgery, ESG is less invasive since there are no incisions or scars. The ESG is performed completely through an endoscope that is placed through the mouth and most patients typically leave the hospital the same day as the procedure.

When can I return to work after the procedure?

Patients for an ESG usually return to work within 2-3 days.

Will I need to follow-up with the doctor after the procedure?

After the procedure, our healthcare team will customize a lifestyle modification plan with you to help you maintain your healthy habits to retain your weight loss over time. Dr. Raijman will follow up with you via a telehealth visit 4 weeks after the procedure. At that time, our healthcare team will help to coordinate you with a wellness coach, to help support your weight loss efforts. Currently, we offer referrals to inhealth lifestyle therapeutics, which is an effective, convenient virtual health coaching program that uses video-based counseling.

What are the side effects?

Some side effects of the ESG may include nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, burping, or diarrhea. However, the symptoms typically disappear within 30-60 days following the procedure and our healthcare team is here to assist you should you have any symptoms.

What are other potential positive health impacts of ESG?

Besides weight loss, studies have shown that patients with hypertension and type II diabetes had some improvement with these conditions along with their weight loss
