The ORBERA weight loss system is a safe and effective, incisionless procedure where a durable balloon is placed endoscopically into the stomach. The balloon takes up space in the stomach to make you feel fuller faster and help with decreasing your food intake. After 6 months, the balloon will be removed from the stomach and our healthcare team will continue to follow up with you regularly to ensure success with your customized weight loss plan.

In a large, randomized clinical study, patients on average lost about 10% of their total body weight, or 38% of excess body weight in the 6 months after ORBERA procedure. Who is a good candidate for ORBERA™ ?

ORBERA weight loss program is designed for adults with a BMI of 30-40 kg/m2 and have not been able to lose weight through diet and exercise alone. ORBERA is also a good choice for patients with a physical condition that makes them ineligible for more invasive bariatric surgeries. ORBERA is only effective for those patients who are willing to follow a 12 month program that includes behavioral lifestyle modifications following the procedure. How much weight can I lose?

On average, patients lose about 10% of total body weight or 3 times the amount of weight lost by diet and exercise in the first 6 months. However, it is important to note that results will vary between each person. Committing to changing your habits and lifestyle will be extremely important to maximizing your results.

How is the procedure performed?

The Orbera procedure is a non-invasive, incisionless procedure performed while you are under sedation. A deflated balloon is placed in the stomach through the mouth while under visualization by a camera. Once the balloon has reached your stomach, it will be inflated with saline until it reaches the size of a grapefruit. The balloon stays in your stomach for 6 months, after which it will be deflated and removed through the same way it was placed in a second procedure.

How will I feel once the balloon has been placed?

The first few days following the procedure, you can expect to experience some side effects, such as nausea, as your body adjusts to the balloon. Dr. Raijman may prescribe medications to help with these symptoms. You may experience the most rapid weight loss results during the first 3 months following the procedure. The amount of weight that is lost will depend heavily on your effort to adjust and maintain your healthy habits.

Why choose Orbera over a gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, or other bariatric surgeries?

Orbera bridges the gap between taking medications and receiving more invasive surgeries, such as the gastric sleeve and gastric bypass. Compared to bariatric surgery, Orbera is a reversible procedure that is less invasive, since there are no incisions or scars and there are no permanent changes to the anatomy of the stomach. The procedure is performed without any incisions or scars and most patients typically leave the hospital the same day as the procedure.

When can I return to work after the procedure?

Patients usually return to work within 1-2 days.

Will I need to follow-up with the doctor after the procedure?

After the procedure, our healthcare team will customize a lifestyle modification plan with you to help you maintain your healthy habits to retain your weight loss over time. Dr. Raijman will follow up with you via a telehealth visit 4 weeks after the procedure and it is highly recommended that you follow-up with a referred nutritionist for the following 6 months after the procedure.

What are the side effects?

You can expect to feel some nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, or discomfort as your body adjusts to the balloon in the body. While major risks or complications are rare, some serious side effects may result from adverse reaction to sedation or an intolerance to the balloon. If any side effects occur, our healthcare team will be available to you and may remove the balloon if severe complications persist.
